There's a lot of investment and a lot of value in your company's data. But it's no use to you if you're out in the field and disconnected from your IT network - unless you can take the information you need with you. Sometimes retrieving data isn't enough - you need to be able to collect data which can later be synchronised to your central database if a direct network connection isn't available. Where multiple users may be bring back data for synchronisation the software system must be carefully designed to ensure that important data is not lost or overwritten with potentially conflicting information.
Considerable thought also needs to go into mobile interface design when used for data collection, as mobile applications are often used at the same time the user is doing other things. This can lead to poor data quality, which may be a critical issue. Mobile applications need to be designed to be especially intuitive while ensuring a low error-level.
